Margo Berman, AWC FIU Student Chapter faculty adviser since 1994 and much acclaimed speaker from last year’s AWC National Conference, is the 2008 AWC Outstanding Adviser Award recipient. Berman is highly involved with the chapter, offering critical advice about the communications world to her students.
One of her crucial recommendations for young professionals is to network and attend as many conferences as you can!

AWC FIU Student Chapter also is the winner of the 2008 AWC Outstanding
Student Chapter Award! This award is based on high quality, visible programming,
fundraising activities and/or special community involvement.
AWC FIU Student Chapter had a very dedicated group of students who met every week this year. In addition to raising $900 for the AWC Student Scholarship
fund, they doubled their membership from the fall to the spring semester.

As a student attending Florida International University since 2005, Magaly Estrella will be graduating with a degree in Liberal Studies and a minor in Communications this April. The soon-to-be graduate will be saying “goodbye” to Miami and “hello” to the open road as an Oscar Mayer “Hotdogger.” The road to her success has included stops in substitute teaching and interning at 944 Magazine and Public Relations firm Janinha Inc.

Serving as Vice President for The Association for Women in Communications for over a year, her active involvement in fundraisers and special events earned her the AWC scholarship this semester. Last March she helped coordinate a highly successful workshop and networking event, “It’s a Jungle Out There!” which featured many prominent figures throughout the Communications field.

The experience and insight she has gained through the organization has opened up an exciting opportunity for her to be a part of the Oscar Mayer team. Chosen from over a thousand applicants, Magaly was one of 14 selected to travel across the country in the Weinermobile attending special festivals and events to promote the already well-known brand.

With the support of her parents Pedro and Maria Estrella and Professor Berman, Magaly was able to stay focused and achieve success. She offers these simple yet powerful words of advice to fellow students “GET INVOLVED!”

At the age of 21, Sabina Ontiveros is getting her sweet taste of success. As a senior at Florida International University, she has already set herself apart from the rest and has claimed her spot on the top of the creativity ladder. Sabina is a college senior majoring in Advertising and will be graduating with a minor in English. Recently, Sabina has been awarded an award for her efforts creating discussions about Professor Berman's book, Street-smart Advertising. She has also made it to the semi-finalist round for the Hallmark intership opportunity. As we delve into the mind of Sabina Ontiveros, we learn that she is far from the average college student --- she has an extraordinary force of creative energy. We congratulate her and wish her the best of luck!

J: Heritage/ Nationality?

Sabina: I'm an American of Mexican descent

J: How does it feel to have so much honors given to you all at once?

Sabina: To be honest, it's really overwhelming. It's a lot of emotions at once! I couldn't believe that I won the Creativity Scholarship, and the fact that I'm a semifinalist for the Hallmark summer internship is very surreal. I feel very fortunate to have such honors bestowed upon me. I am very thankful. It's really exciting!

J: In what ways are these two awards similar and/ or different?

Sabina: Both of these awards called for creativity and a passion for writing. They were similiar in the fact that I had to showcase my talents and my creativity, as well as my love of writing. However, they were different in that the Hallmark application called for more critical and analytical thinking while the Creativity Scholarship was more open to whatever the applicant wanted to put down.

J: How important is creativity to you?

Sabina: It's deeply important to me. Creativity is what fuels my life. It is integral. There isn't a day that goes by where I am not inspired or get a new idea. If there was no creativity in the world, it would be nothing short of a wasteland. I would not be able to thrive if creativity was nonexistent. I don't think anyone could.

J: How did you go by generating sales for Professor Berman's book?

Sabina: To be honest, I had heard about Professor Berman's book last year but I wasn't aware of what it completely entailed until I took her class this Spring 2008 semester. I do highly recommend it to anyone that is interested in media or in the advertising field.

J: What is your favorite college course at the moment (Spring 2008)?

Sabina: That's a tough question! I have to say that I'm really enjoying all of my courses, most especially Electronic Art and Advanced Print Concepts and Radio and TV Concepts. These courses stimulate my creativity, and one thing that I love is learning new things. I have learned a lot in Professor Berman's class, and I'm grateful for it. Electronic Art is a great class because I'm able to improve my skills in Photoshop as well as experiment with different art styles and make new ones. I'm having a great semester this year.

J: Do you have any heroes and major influences?

Sabina:I admire strong women and people who are extremely creative. Definitely Lucy Lawless of Xena: Warrior Princess and the creators behind the video game Final Fantasy IV. I also admire Gwen Stefani because she's a great singer, fashion designer, and was absolutely amazing in No Doubt. I have her and the band to thank for my musical influences.

J: What's next for you?

Sabina: Definitely graduating from FIU and getting a job in a creative field. I'd also really love to get started on some personal projects, including an online comic and writing fiction novels. There's also a bunch of new video games coming out that I'd love to play in my free time!

J: What are your future career goals?

Sabina: I'd love to work at a company that ultilizes my imagination and creativity, as well as write fantasy novels and work on my art

J: Any words of advice for individuals who are struggling with their creativity?

Sabina: Don't try to force yourself! It's easier to let creativity come to you rather than search for it. For me, music is a big factor in aiding my creativity. I'd also suggest reading fiction and nonfiction books, sampling different kinds of music, and meeting new people. Get out and experience new things. Travel. You'll be amazed at how quickly you can be inspired when you surround yourself with new experiences!

J: Any favorite Quote/ Words you live by?

Sabina: I'll answer both! A quote by Tad Danielewski: "Communication is not just words; communication is architecture. Because of course it is quite obvious that a house which would be built without the sense, without that desire for communication, would not look the way your house looks today." The words that I live by are: "Monotony is a monstrosity."

J: Something weird about you people may not know?
Sabina: I once dressed up as a wizard for Halloween when I was 8. I had a beard, a crystal ball and robes. I'm also obsessed with chocolate milk and European metal.

J: Let's play a bit of WORD ASSOCIATION...life?

FIU SJMC hosts 17th Annual Student Celebration & Award Ceremony

Florida International University will be hosting the 17th Annual Student Celebration & Awards Ceremony on Thursday, April 3rd 2008. The School of Journalism and Mass Communication will honor its students for their excellence, dedication and achievements. This event is scheduled to commence at 5pm at the Biscayne Bay Campus in the WUC Ballroom. Special guests include, Virgil L. Smith and Marybel Rodríguez.

Virgil L. Smith, Vice President Talent Management for the Gannett Company, will be the keynote speaker. The Gannett Co., Inc. has made a name for itself in the communications world as they currently publish more than 80 daily newspapers in the USA. The company originated in 1906 and continues to expand and deliver news efficiently and to the nation.

Marybel Rodríguez, news anchor and reporter for CBS4 and My33 news station. Marybel graduated from Florida International University in the year 2000 with a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism.

FIU's The Beacon reports on "It's a Jungle Out There!"

Although lions, tigers and bears will not be roaming in this jungle, students will have a chance to prepare for the "vicious" world of communication with some "animals" in the field.

The School of Journalism and Mass Communications, along with The Association for Women in Communications and AdScene, will be hosting "It's a Jungle Out There!," a communications survival guide, on March 27 from 11 a.m to 3:30 p.m in the BBC Ballrooms. There will be workshops with speakers in the fields of advertising, broadcasting, event planning, journalism and public relations, and a networking party to conclude the event.

Manuel Gutierrez, one of the creators of "It's a Jungle Out There!," said the purpose of the event is to offer students an in-depth look into the world of communications.

"The reason is so students can get first hand knowledge from working professionals," said Gutierrez, a senior majoring in advertising, and the vice president of web design for the Association of Women in Communications. "It's for [students] to get a real overview of their future careers. That is our main goal - everything extra is gravy - but if they can get that, than the job was accomplished."

Andres Almeida, president of AdScene, said the event will give students a hands-on experience.

"[It will] give students an opportunity to know what its like when you get out into the real world," said Almeida, a senior advertising major. "[Students] just don't want to get the textbook education because it's not enough - they want to get the real life education."

According to Gutierrez, the workshops are not meant to be lectures, but rather a "two-way communication from the students to speakers", including Lucho Durand, news assignment manager for CBS4, Kevin Kaminski, editor for Boca Raton Magazine and Phyllis Cambria, award winning event planner and author. There will be three sessions and four rooms and students can jump in and out as they please.

"The workshops will present invaluable information that [students] will get from working professionals and the opportunity to network with these people which is the most important to make a first impression," said Gutierrez.

This is the first time the event is being held, but Gutierrez said that AdScene plans to try and make it an annual activity. Also he defined the theme as an art.

"Communications is not a science, it's an art, and since that's the case we believe that from school to the actual career, it's a jungle," said Gutierrez. "You have to do more than just get that 4.0. You have to network, make sure that's the proper career you want, and most importantly make relations with working professionals."

There is no strict dress code for the event, but students should dress as if they are interviewing for a job. The event is free to all students and food and refreshments will be provided. Students not in SJMC are also encouraged to attend.

"Any student can attend because you might find something that you never thought you would be interested in, and all of a sudden you can have your eyes opened," said Almeida.

Five (5) $2,500 awards available to high school, undergraduate, and community college students pursuing a degree in journalism (print) at FIU. Must be a full-time degree-seeking student within the SJMC during the award period. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Must submit a 2-page typewritten (double-spaced) essay about your career goals, reasons for choosing the profession, and where you would like to work in the future. Must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (SJMC faculty preferred). High school and community college applicants must submit an official transcript. FIU applicants must submit an unofficial transcript. If you have earned 12 credits or less at FIU, submit an unofficial transcript from all other colleges attended.

An endowment scholarship fund was established in 1991 in memory of Chusmir, who was a former executive editor of the Miami Herald. She was the paper’s first female editor and guided the newspaper to two Pulitzer Prizes.

Abel Mestre, a radio and TV pioneer in Cuba, strongly defended the principles of a democratic system and freedom of the press. The scholarship was established in 2002 in his memory.

Gwen Margolis was the first woman president of the Florida Senate from 1990-1992. She later became a county commissioner for Miami-Dade County until she returned to the state senate in 2002, where she will serve until 2008.

Ok guys,

We played like a team for the last bake sale and we did a great job! It's almost time to award scholarships for the end of the semester, so we should make sure we're extra padded, and hopefully we can hand out more scholarships than usual. Our next bake sale will take place on Thursday, November 29th. We will start at 11:00 am again, and run until 2:00 pm. But this time we need people to man the tables, and others to man the cart/carts. We will have plenty of Free Chocolate, free pastries, and thanks to Andres and Starbucks, we have coffee this time!!!

The MiamiHerald is offering a paid internship for full time SJMC students.

Requirements:Full acceptance into the SJMC program, but the completion of JOU 3343 is preferred for the internship.

Duties: They can range from working with reporters and editors, covering events, government, politics and crime. You will also be writing features and handling breaking news.

Interviews will be held November 28 from 12pm-6pm but you have to sign up in ACII 320 with Carmen Tucker. If you have any questions, contact Professor Neil Reisner at reisnern@fiu.edu, or stop by his office in ACII 318.

Updates on planning for the Big Brothers & Big Sisters of America event. 11/15/07

Today's meeting was another step forward in the execution of our event. Keep in mind that for Tuesday's meeting, we should dress professionally because we will be meeting with the individuals who will effectively make or break us. Also, Darcy will kindly be taking individual portraits and a group photo for AWC right after the meeting.

Items brought up today include:
Goals - secure venue by the end of the month, gain publicity, direct contact with target audience, raise money for Big Brothers & Big Sisters of America
Logistics - logo placement for our sponsors and partners, Nicole Shelley Models building our "set," ticket price for the event and nominal increases as date closes in, food & beverage, dress code, Living Plush booth, gift bags, among other items.
We'll also be looking into what made last month's Shades of Pink Fashion Show such a success.
Positions - committees include: creative, marketing, production, publicity, media relations, sponsor relations
The Big Picture - what will we do for our sponsors? how can we benefit? name of event?

Finally, we all agreed to divide and conquer. Communication is key! We're all very excited about our event - just remember that everyone has something to contribute. Congrats on getting the ball rolling. Let's all have a good time with this. We're great!

Life Extension Foundation makes gift bags heavier

Life Extension has donated 500 vitamin deluxe samples, and 2000 of their magazines for us to use for gift bags!

The Life Extension Foundation is a non-profit group that funds pioneering scientific research aimed at achieving an indefinitely extended healthy human lifespan. The fruits of this research are used to develop novel disease prevention and treatment protocols.

They were so enthusiastic about the news of our plans for the fashion show in March, that they have invited us to plan an AWC coordinated event for them sometime in 2008. This is a great opportunity for internships. For more information, contact Sherise.

Ghirardelli gave us about 2,000 square chocolate pieces for us to use in our gift bags that we give away at any of our events, or to our new members. (Don't worry old members you get stuff too... lol.) Anyway, we can give these away at the bake sale on Tuesday. This was the first time I've tried Ghirardelli chocolate, (I think...) and it's not surprisingly good delicious!

SJMC's food/toy drive

I just wanted to re-post this in case anyone hasn't heard of this effort.

SJMC Students:SGA at BBC began a canned food/toy drive on our campus on Monday, November5. Individual schools at BBC (HM, Arts & Sciences, SJMC, etc.) are competingagainst one another to see who can put together the most donations. So here's what you need to know. Stop by my office in ACII 336A and drop offyour canned food or toy donation. If you bring at least three canned fooditems or one new toy, I'll give you a free SJMC water bottle. It's not muchof an incentive, but providing food and toys to members of your communityfor the upcoming holiday season should more than motivate you.

Razorfish is coming to FIU!

Carmen, Andres, Malika, Magaly and I went to the Bogusky event tonight, and we met the vice president of avenue a razorfish! Her name is Susan Kidwell she's the vice president- Florida and Carolinas and she's expressed a desire to come to our AWC meeting to present and look for interns, and new people to hire! If you are interested in digital marketing this will be an incredible opportunity for you. "She's trying to recruit" so we need to make sure that we have a great turn-out to that meeting so that she'll have a few great options. In case you don't know AdFed is having an event this Tuesday (today) from 6 pm until 9:15 pm at The Museum of Art in Ft Lauderdale. Alex Bogusky of Crispin Porter and Bogusky will be speaking at this event from 7:15 until 9 pm. Volunteering to help with this event is a great way for student communicators to be apart of what's going on in South Florida's Advertising Scene and you'll probably have more networking opportunities as well. Fundraiser "Bake Sale" - 11/05/07

As many of you know, the Spring Semester's Communications Week at FIU is going to be in the hands of AWC, Adscene, and PRSSA. I haven't spoken to anyone from PRSSA, but David Berry (Adscene faculty advisor) has at least one event that he would like to involve them in. We all want the events to be a huge success that will give our students more networking opportunities, as well as bringing more attention to the clubs themselves, and getting more students involved.

One thing that will help ensure the success of these events is sufficient funding. So, in addition to our weekend workshops and Margo's book events, we are having a bake sale. I spoke with Esther from FIU about setting up a table or two for our bake sale. The last thing I need to do is fill out the paper work for FIU funds. Earlier we decided to have our members donate items that we could then bake. This is a good idea, but we have less control that way over exactly what we get. If we can get a purchase order from FIU we can buy exactly what we need. I have a lot of faith in the baking capabilites of Carmen Alayeto, so I think she's probably the best person to go shopping for all of the supplies, or at least make the list (don't worry I'll help). Magaly is working on a budget for the bake sale. She will post the budget here. Please leave a comment if you would like to be involved in the bake sale. Indicate whether you are interested in baking or selling.
