For 2007-2008 Academic Year

JANET CHUSMIR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
PRINT JOURNALISM MAJORS

Five (5) $2,500 awards available to high school, undergraduate, and community college students pursuing a degree in journalism (print) at FIU. Must be a full-time degree-seeking student within the SJMC during the award period. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Must submit a 2-page typewritten (double-spaced) essay about your career goals, reasons for choosing the profession, and where you would like to work in the future. Must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (SJMC faculty preferred). High school and community college applicants must submit an official transcript. FIU applicants must submit an unofficial transcript. If you have earned 12 credits or less at FIU, submit an unofficial transcript from all other colleges attended.

An endowment scholarship fund was established in 1991 in memory of Chusmir, who was a former executive editor of the Miami Herald. She was the paper’s first female editor and guided the newspaper to two Pulitzer Prizes.

TRIBUNE/SUN-SENTINEL HONORS SCHOLARSHIP
ALL SJMC MAJORS

One or more $2,500 awards available. Must be a full-time degree-seeking student within the SJMC during the award period. Must be fully admitted into one of SJMC’s tracks. Must be a junior or senior. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher. Must submit a brief essay of two typewritten pages (double-spaced) on the subject of "The Impact of the Internet on the Newspaper Business." This scholarship may lead to an internship opportunity with the Sun-Sentinel. Submit an unofficial transcript and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (SJMC faculty preferred). If you have earned 12 credits or less at FIU, submit an unofficial transcript from all other colleges attended.

EV CLAY/PRSA MIAMI ENDOWMENT FUND SCHOLARSHIP

PUBLIC RELATIONS MAJORS

One (1) $2,500 award available. Applicant must be a full-time, fully-admitted student within the SJMC pursuing a major in public relations during the award period. Student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Must submit a 2-page typewritten (double-spaced) essay about your career goals, reasons for choosing the profession, and where you would like to work in the future. Must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (SJMC faculty preferred). High school and community college applicants must submit an official transcript. FIU applicants must submit an unofficial transcript. If you have earned 12 credits or less at FIU, submit an unofficial transcript from all other colleges attended.

Ev Clay was a public relations pioneer in the City of Miami.

BLEVENS SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP IN JOURNALISM

JOURNALISM MAJORS

One (1) $2,000 award available to a rising senior. Must be a full-time, fully-admitted senior within the SJMC pursuing a major in journalism during the award period. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5. Must submit a 2-page typewritten (double-spaced) essay about your career goals, reasons for choosing the profession, and where you would like to work in the future. Submit an unofficial transcript and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (SJMC faculty preferred). If you have earned 12 credits or less at FIU, submit an unofficial transcript from all other colleges attended.

UNIVISION RADIO SCHOLARSHIP
BROADCAST JOURNALISM MAJORS

One $1,250 award available to a full-time junior or senior fully-admitted into SJMC’s journalism (broadcast) track during the award period. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20. Must submit a brief essay of two typewritten pages (double-spaced) on the subject of "Broadcast Journalism and The Latino Community." Submit an unofficial transcript and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (SJMC faculty preferred). If you have earned 12 credits or less at FIU, submit an unofficial transcript from all other colleges attended.

SOUTH FLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF BLACK JOURNALISTS SCHOLARSHIP
JOURNALISM MAJORS

Up to $1,000 award available to a full-time student of African descent (i.e., African-American, Haitian, Caribbean, etc.) and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident pursuing a degree in print or broadcast journalism within the SJMC during the award period. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Must submit a 2-page typewritten (double-spaced) essay about your career goals, reasons for choosing the profession, and where you would like to work in the future. Submit an unofficial transcript and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (SJMC faculty preferred). If you have earned 12 credits or less at FIU, submit an unofficial transcript from all other colleges attended.

CBS 4/WFOR-TV SCHOLARSHIP
TELEVISION AND BROADCAST JOURNALISM MAJORS

One (1) $1,000 award available. Must be a full-time, fully-admitted minority student within the SJMC pursuing a major in television during the award period. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Must submit a 2-page typewritten (double-spaced) essay about your career goals, reasons for choosing the profession, and where you would like to work in the future. Submit an unofficial transcript and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (SJMC faculty preferred). If you have earned 12 credits or less at FIU, submit an unofficial transcript from all other colleges attended.

ABEL MESTRE SCHOLARSHIP

JOURNALISM & TELEVISION MAJORS

One (1) $1,000 award available. Must be a full-time degree-seeking student within the SJMC pursuing a major in journalism or television during the award period. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who was born in or one of whose parents or grandparents was born in Cuba (submit proof). Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Must submit a 2-page typewritten (double-spaced) essay about your career goals, reasons for choosing the profession, and where you would like to work in the future. Submit an unofficial transcript and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (SJMC faculty preferred). If you have earned 12 credits or less at FIU, submit an unofficial transcript from all other colleges attended.

Abel Mestre, a radio and TV pioneer in Cuba, strongly defended the principles of a democratic system and freedom of the press. The scholarship was established in 2002 in his memory.

SENATOR GWEN MARGOLIS SCHOLARSHIP
ALL SJMC MAJORS

One (1) $1,000 award available to a full-time, African-American student pursuing any degree within the SJMC during the award period. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Must submit a 2-page typewritten (double-spaced) essay about your career goals, reasons for choosing the profession, and where you would like to work in the future. Submit an unofficial transcript and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (SJMC faculty preferred). If you have earned 12 credits or less at FIU, submit an unofficial transcript from all other colleges attended.

Gwen Margolis was the first woman president of the Florida Senate from 1990-1992. She later became a county commissioner for Miami-Dade County until she returned to the state senate in 2002, where she will serve until 2008.

WILLIAM C. ADAMS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

PUBLIC RELATIONS MAJORS

One (1) $1,000 award available. Must be a full-time, fully-admitted student within the SJMC pursuing a major in public relations during the award period. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Must submit a 2-page typewritten (double-spaced) essay about your career goals, reasons for choosing the profession, and where you would like to work in the future. Submit an unofficial transcript and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (SJMC faculty preferred). If you have earned 12 credits or less at FIU, submit an unofficial transcript from all other colleges attended.

William Adams was a well-respected public relations professor in the SJMC at FIU.

APPLICATION DEADLINE is Friday, February 29, 2008

Applications will be reviewed and selection made by the SJMC Scholarship Committee in accordance with specific scholarship requirements.

In addition to the individual scholarship stipulations, students receiving a scholarship must attend SJMC’s annual student celebration and awards ceremony (for date and time contact the Student Services Office). Scholarship recipients must maintain full-time status (12 credits or more) during the 2008-2009 academic year.
